'The Unknown Warrior' takes pride of place inside historic Barrow Hill Roundhouse for LMS Gala of the Year
'The Unknown Warrior' is expected to bring in the crowds at Barrow Hill roundhouse, near Chesterfield for the three day LMS Gala of the year - 'Ticket to Ride'. Starting on Friday 25th September and running until Sunday 27th September, visitors to the Gala will be able to view the latest progress of 'The Unknown Warrior'.
Positioned inside the historic former Midland Railway roundhouse, the only surviving working steam roundhouse in the country, 'The Unknown Warrior' has taken pride of place amongst a fantastic line up of former Midland and LMS motive power. Visiting Barrow Hill for the first time is 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland', together with 'Jubilee' no. 45690 'Leander', Black 5 45305 , 8F 8274, 'Flying Pig' 43106, 'Jinty' 47406, Stanier 2-6-4 Tank no. 42500, Midland Compound 1000, L&Y 0-6-0 no.12322 and Johnson 'half cab' no. 41708.
Billed as the biggest LMS event since the Crewe Loco Works 'Great Gathering' 10 years ago, 'Ticket to Ride' is expected to bring in massive crowds to Barrow Hill over the three days.
The LMS-Patriot Project is pushing its fundraising efforts to help finish 'The Unknown Warrior'. The all new boiler is currently being assembled at LNWR Heritage at Crewe and around £200,000 is still needed to complete this. Donations can be made here.
After Barrow Hill, 'The Unknown Warrior' will be transported to Tyseley Loco Works near Birmingham, for the bogie and cylinder liners to be fitted. This will enable the new build 'Patriot' to become a 4-6-0 for the first time. Visitors to the Tyseley Open Weekend on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October will be able to view further progress.
