Privateer Beers' Donation Helps to Build 'The Unknown Warrior' Memorial Engine

The LMS-Patriot Project, the charitable Project that is building the new Royal British Legion Endorsed National Memorial Engine ‘The Unknown Warrior', is pleased to announce that it has received a £1350 donation from Privateer Beers. The donation has funded a new axle for one of the bogie wheelsets at the front of the 4-6-0 locomotive.

In 2014, Privateer Beers, a flourishing Manchester micro-brewery produced a fundraising real ale called ‘Patriot'. The proceeds from the sale of this ale have been donated to the LMS-Patriot Company by Matt Jervis, owner of Privateer Beers, and keen supporter of The LMS-Patriot Project, which is building the new £1.5 million steam locomotive.

Matt Jervis said, “We are delighted that through our collaboration with The LMS-Patriot Project we have been able to raise the money for such a substantial part of the locomotive. I would like to thank all the members of the project who have given their time and skills freely to help us create a range of products that match the quality of engineering that is currently taking place at Llangollen and around the country.

As the only LMS new build project I have been following progress with great interest and when the opportunity arose to contribute in a practical way we jumped at the chance.

We set about designing a brand new ale using English hops, a first for the brewery. Then navigated the minefield of regulations for the labeling of bottles, another first and have now been selling the beer for several months. We have had loads of fantastic feedback about the beer and I hope that on top of raising money we have also contributed in raising the profile of the Project and brought it to a wider audience.”

In addition to ‘Patriot' ale, Privateer will also be producing three specially brewed ‘Patriot' themed ales - ‘Illustrious', ‘The Unknown Warrior', and a fourth yet to be named beer for The LMS-Patriot Project. The name ‘The Unknown Warrior' will be carried on the new memorial locomotive that is currently under construction and ‘Patriot' and ‘Illustrious' were names that were carried by ‘Patriot' class steam locomotives, which were all sadly scrapped in the 1960s.

‘Patriot' ale was initially been launched as a cask ale to the trade, and a bottled version of ‘Patriot' ale is now available. ‘Patriot' ale is a 3.9% ABV amber ale brewed using English hops.

Sales of Privateer Beers, will help to build the new British Legion Endorsed National Memorial engine - ‘The Unknown Warrior', which will be completed for 2018 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice. The LMS-Patriot Project will be selling the ‘Patriot' ales at selected Rail Ale events and Steam Galas during 2015.
